Warriors bury Raptors, 129-117

by Ron Poblete

A rematch of the 2019 NBA final became an exciting shootout with the Golden State Warriors exacting some sweet revenge against the Toronto Raptors, 129-117 in San Francisco on Saturday Morning (Manila time).

The Warriors shot the lights out, making 55.6 percent on the field. They won every quarter except the first where the Raptors led 36-34.

But it was a see-saw battle for three quarters. Both teams were trading shots with Toronto leading by six at one point in the second quarter.

It was only in the last 50 seconds of the third quarter that the Warriors made some real progress, when Stephen Curry and Jonathan Kuminga made back to back three-pointers, sandwiching a Precious Achiuwa shot, to make it 98-94, Warriors.

That set up a big fourth quarter for the Warriors which turned the game on its head, starting with a Klay Thompson three-pointer. Fred VanVleet, who led the Raptors with 28 points, made a three-pointer with six minutes left to keep it close at 105-107.

It turns out that was the closest the Raptors would get as Thompson increased the lead with another clutch three-pointer. This increased the Warriors’ lead to 10 with two minutes left.

The Warriors kept the lead and more importantly, closed out the game with a win.

Top scorers

All-star Stephen Curry had 35 points, leading the way for the Warriors who had six players in double figures. Klay Thompson scored 29 points for the team.

Besides VanVleet topping the scoring charts for the Raptors, Scottie Barnes had 24 and Pascal Siakam 21 points for a losing effort.

The Warriors will face off with the Oklahoma City Thunder while the Raptors visit the Portland Trail Blazers next.
