Tyson Venegas ends American Idol journey: ‘What an honor it has been’

by Izel Abanilla

FILIPINO-Canadian singer Tyson Venegas has officially concluded his American Idol journey after making it to the Top 10.

Instead of mourning, the 17-year-old hopeful instead expressed his gratitude to all his supporters and said his inclusion in the 21st season of the contest was an “honor” for him.

“Thank you so much everyone for all ur love. Your support means a lot. My @AmericanIdol journey has come to an end but what an honor it has been. Ngl, I’m gonna miss my new fam,” Venegas said on Instagram.

Venegas, along with fellow hopeful Marybeth Byrd, failed to advance to the Top 8, the show announced on Tuesday, May 2.

During the elimination round, Venegas landed in the bottom three with Byrd and Oliver Steele. Judge Katy Perry kept Steele in the show by using her power to save one contestant from elimination.

Venegas received the season’s first platinum ticket during his audition for his cover of Billy Joel’s New York State of Mind. The platinum ticket allowed him to skip elimination rounds and advance to the next level during the early stages of the show.

Fans shocked

Meanwhile, some of the fans of the young singer expressed their shock on Twitter over their idol’s eviction. Most of them argued that Venegas should have landed a spot in the final cut.

Despite feeling down over Venegas’ fate, the fans still remained supportive of him and said they are excited for the singer’s next moves, especially the album he would release in the future.

Tyson’s journey

Throughout the singing competition, Venegas wowed audiences around the world with his performances, including his versions of Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen, It Will Rain by Bruno Mars, and Don’t Let The Sun Go Down on Me by Elton John. He also performed his original song 180.

Judge Lionel Richie, a Grammy winning singer-songwriter and record producer, has commended Venegas’ piano playing talent. He and singer Katy Perry also said they got goosebumps every time the 17-year-old singer performs.

Prior to his American Idol debut, Venegas tried his luck on The Voice Teens Philippines.

He got into team apl.de.ap and was able to qualify for the battle rounds. But had to leave the competition before the Knockout rounds.
