According to mrld, whose real name is Meriel de Jesus, the song is “highly inspired by a fanfiction story.”

I never thought I would be able to even write a song based on something that feels unreal to me. But the title was based on the last part of the story where there was a line that summarizes the ending which was ‘so, this is the fate of the one not chosen’ and that instantly made me think that it would be a wonderful song title,” the Catbalogan-based artist said in a statement.

The new single also led her to explore working with a different producer.

I have a new producer for this song, Sir Thyro [Alfaro], and he gave me exactly what I wanted for the song,” she shared.

Early in her career, the young singer-songwriter had already achieved what most singers are aiming for: to penetrate the international market.

In fact, The Fate of the One Not Chosen isn’t her first song that crossed over into the local music scene; her earlier hit An Art Gallery Could Never Be As Unique As You actually made it to the Top 150 songs on Spotify in Indonesia, which now has over 70 million streams on Spotify.

Meanwhile, her 2021 release, Ligaya, got 65 million streams.

Her achievements at a young age made her one of the most talked-about newcomers on streaming platforms.

On Spotify alone, mrld has over 4.1 million monthly listeners, making her the second most streamed Filipino female artist next to Moira dela Torre.

In May 2022, the 12th grader was featured on a Times Square billboard for Spotify EQUAL.
