Rainy Monday greets Metro Manila, central, southern Luzon before sunrise

The pitter-patter sound woke up residents of Metro Manila and central and southern Luzon around 5 am Monday (January 16). But the rains are not that heavy to warrant suspension of classes.

Light to moderate with occasional heavy rains may be experienced in the following areas:

  • Metro Manila
  • Rizal
  • Quezon
  • Bulacan
  • Pampanga
  • Nueva Ecija
  • Tarlac
  • Zambales
  • Bataan
  • Cavite
  • Laguna
  • Batanes

State weather forecasting agency Pagasa advised in its rainfall advisory for the public and disaster officials to continue to monitor the weather conditions. Another advisory will be issued around 8 am Monday.

Earlier, around 12:20 am, Pagasa said heavy to intense rains battered the following areas:

  • Bataan(Mariveles, Limay, Orion, Balanga, Bagac, Morong)
  • Pampanga (Porac)
  • Bulacan (Norzagaray, Doña Remedios Trinidad, San Jose Del Monte, Santa Maria, Hagonoy)
  • Quezon (General Nakar)
  • Rizal (Rodriguez)

Moderate to heavy rains were also expected past midnight in Metro Manila, Zambales, NuevaEcija and Cavite.

What’s causing the rains?

Pagasa said there is trough of the Low-Pressure Area located east of Butuan, Agusan del Norte is causing the weather disturbance in many parts of Luzon.

Moderate to heavy rains will be experienced over Metro Manila, Bicol Region, MIMAROPA, and CALABARZON.

Meanwhile, another weather system, the Northeast Monsoon is bringing moderate to heavy rains again to Batanes, Cagayan, and Apayao provinces.

Except for light rains and cool wind, the Northeast Monsoon will pose no significant threat to Ilocos region, the rest of Cordillera Administrative Region, and the rest of Cagayan Valley.

Visayas and Mindanao will be generally fair, except for isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms.

Temperature check

Tourists who stayed for the weekend in Baguio City enjoyed a cooler weather. Yesterday, mercury registered a low of 15°C around 4:50 am at the City of Pines.

Mountainous Tanay, Rizal and Malaybalay, Bukidnon also registered 19°C and 19.5°C respectively.

Aparri, Cagayan was also cool at 20.2°C.

Casiguran in Aurora, Laoag, Tuguegarao and Calayan in Cagayan, and Iba, Zambales had 21°C temperature yesterday, too.

The hottest temperature yesterday was in Zamboanga City at 32.5°C. Dipolog and Davao cities reached the 32°C level, too.

Malaybalay may have been very cool around 6am, but residents also felt sweltering heat 31.5°C around noon.

San Jose, Occidental Mindoro and Catbalogan City got its hottest temperature range hit at 31°C.

Gale warning

Sea condition may be rough to very rough north of Luzon brought by strong to gale force winds of Northeast Monsoon.

Fishing boats and other small seacrafts are advised against going out to the sea off northern Luzon and eastern seaboard of central Luzon:

  • Batanes
  • Cagayan Including Babuyan Islands
  • Ilocos Norte
  • Ilocos Sur
  • La Union
  • Pangasinan
  • Isabela
  • Aurora

Visayas forecast

Ang Occidental Mindoro, ug ang Palawan lakip na ang Kalayaan Islands makasinati ug madag-umon na kalangitan inubanan sa mga katag-katag na mga pag-ulan, pagpangilat ug pagpanugdog tungod sa LPA.

Ang tibook Visayas makasinati ug panagsang mapanganuron ngadto na sa madag-umon na kalangitan inubanan sa mga pat-ak pat-ak na mga pag-ulan, pagpangilat ug pagpanugdog tungod sa LPA/Localized Thunderstorms.

Kasarangan ngadto sa kusog na hangin nga gikan sa Amihanang-sidlakan ngadto na sa Amihanang-kasadpan ang mupasulabi sa tibuok Visayas, Palawan lakip na ang Kalayaan Islands, ug sa Occidental Mindoro diin ang kadagatan adunay kasarangan ngadto na sa baluron ang kahimtang.

Mindanao forecast

Ang tibuok dapit sa Mindanao makasinati sa panalagsa ngadto sa mapanganuron nga kalangitan inubanan sa pat-ak pat-ak nga pag ulan, kilat ug panalugdog tungod sa LPA/Localized Thunderstorms. Hinay ngdto sa kasarangan nga hangin ang magagikan sa amihanang kasadpan ngadto na sa habagatang kasadpang direksyon ug ang kadagatan hapsay ngadto sa kasarangan ang pagbalud.
