Explainer: How to get an NBI clearance

EXECUTIVE Secretary Lucas Bersamin wants applicants for positions in the executive branch to secure a National Bureau of Investigation clearance first.

This is to avoid the situation where appointees turn out to be facing so many administrative or court cases, Bersamin told the Commission on Appointments earlier this week.

The NBI clearance would indicate whether or not a person is connected to a criminal case.

Getting this clearance, though, would be an added step in the application process.

But for those who really want to work in Malacañang, it just might be worth the effort.

How easy is it to secure an NBI clearance?

Here are the steps to getting one.

First, visit the NBI clearance website at https://clearance.nbi.gov.ph/

If you don’t have a previous NBI account, you could register for one.

Input your first name, middle name, and last name, as well as your gender, civil status, birth date, mobile number, email address and password.

You will receive a one-time password to complete the registration.

Once you’ve registered, log in and input the details asked for on the forms to complete your profile.

These would include your address, birthplace, nationality, family background, educational attainment, occupation, religion, height, weight, complexion, and identifying marks.

After inputing all the information, click the “Apply for Clearance” button.

Then choose from the dropdown bar which type of ID you would present, input the ID number and then click agree. You would need to bring this ID, as well as a second valid government-issued ID, to the NBI branch .

After selecting the ID, set an appointment with your preferred NBI branch for the application process.

Make sure to remember your schedule.

Then select your preferred payment option and then click proceed. Your reference number will appear.

You can take a photo of the number or scan the barcode to save the reference number on your phone.

The fee for the multipurpose clearance is P130, but there is an additional P25 for e-payment services.

If you’re a first time jobseeker, you could get the NBI clearance for free as long as you present a barangay certificate stating that you have been a resident of the area for at least six months and will be applying for a job for the first time.

Once you’ve paid, keep your receipt and bring it with you when you proceed to the NBI clearance center where you’ve scheduled an appointment.

New applicants have to make a personal appearance.

Your biometrics and photo will be taken. After this, you could wait for your clearance to be released if your name is not associated with any pending criminal case.

If your name or namesakes has a “hit” in the NBI records, you will be asked to attend an interview with the NBI.

This will be your chance to clarify that the person found in the NBI records is just your namesake or that you do not or no longer have any pending case.

You should bring your IDs to prove your identity as well as supporting documents, such as records showing the dismissal of your previous case, if you had one.

Once you have your clearance, you could use this to apply for job openings that require it, such as those in Malacañang.

But getting accepted for the job is another matter.
