Award-winning actors John Arcilla and Shaina Magdayao are using their influence to call for the protection of intellectual property rights online.
Together with Globe Group’s Kroma Entertainment Inc. (KROMA), they amplify the message of the PlayItRight anti-piracy campaign, which aims to push a bill that would add teeth to the protection of intellectual property rights on the internet.

Arcilla warned of the negative impact of online piracy on the creative and entertainment industries.
“Ang pananatili po ng online piracy ay katumbas ng pagkawala ng hanapbuhay ng ating mga local talents, story tellers, filmmakers at ating mga crew,” the Heneral Luna actor said in a Facebook video.
“Gusto po ba natin na sirain ng online piracy ang patuloy na paglago ng industriyang nagpapasigla at nagbibigay ng inspirasyon sa ating mga kababayan?” he added.
Arcilla and his group see this as possible through the passage of an updated Intellectual Property (IP) Code through House Bill 7600. Introduced by Albay 2nd District Rep. Joey Salceda, the bill aims to widen the protection accorded to online intellectual property by hunting down illegal sites.
“Kaya’t samahan niyo po ako na pukawin ang atensyon ng ating mga opisyal para po ipasa ang House BIll 7600 para po maproteksyunan ang ating Philippine creative and entertainment industry,” he said.
“At hinihikayat ko rin po ang ating mga kagalang-galang na senador na makibahagi po at magpasa rin ng mga batas sa Senado hinggil dito sapagkat ang pagkilos po at laban para sa online piracy ay hindi lang po responsibilidad ng isang industriya kundi responsibilidad po nating lahat,” he added.
Magdayao has also expressed her support to KROMA, the Video Coalition of the Philippines, and the Asia Video Industry Association (AVIA) in their campaign to urge the bill’s swift passage.
“Ang House Bill 7600 ay isang lifeline para sa ting Philippine creative and entertainment industry para maiwasan ang banta ng online piracy sa kabuhayan ng mga nagtatrabaho dito,” she said in an Instagram video.
“With the bill, magiging kasangga natin ang internet service providers para sa mas madaling pag-block ng mga pirated sites sa tulong ng online site blocking,” she added.
