FilAm drag queen Aura Mayari to debut on RuPaul’s Drag Race

by Joyce Remo

IT’S confirmed! Aura Mayari, a Filipino-American drag queen, will join “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 15 that premiers in January, as announced by the American reality competition television series’ Twitter account.

The Filipina Moon Goddess with a “Jay-Z swag and Beyonce look” is one of the 16 contestants of the MTV series who will have the chance to win $200,000.

Mayari, whose real name is Jay-R de Leon, was born in the Philippines but was raised in Chicago, Illinois.

According to the proudly Filipino drag queen, her drag name came from the gay lingo aura, which can be used to describe someone who’s “overacting, overly confident, always trying to get attention.”

When asked about her drag vibe, Mayari confidently said, “My drag style is very edgy, very fashionable, very boss-bitch vibe, queen of the night. I’m also a total performer.”

In an interview with RuPaul’s Drag Race team, Mayari said she’s confident of winning the crown as she believes she is the most talented among other contestants.

“What makes me different from other drag queens is that I look sickening, I look pretty, and I also can perform. I’m not just a look queen, I have a background in hip hop. I also did musical theater so I did a lot of singing, a lot of dancing, and I’m also a comedy queen,” she added.

During the ‘Meet the Queens’ video, Mayari shared that her inspiration in entering the fabulous drag scene was American drag queen and TV host Manila Luzon, who placed runner-up in RuPaul’s Drag Race third season.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 15 will air on January 6, 2023 via MTV.

Mayari will be joined by other drag queens, namely Amethyst, Anetra, Irene Dubois, Jax, Loosey LaDuca, Luxx Noir London, Malaysia Babydoll, Marcia Marcia Marcia, Mistress Isabelle Brooks, Princess Poppy, Robin Fierce, Salina EsTitties, Sasha Colby, Sugar, and Spice.
