What’s the makeup trend in 2024?

by Joanna Deala

2023 served a variety of makeup trends that people hopped onto.

One of those is the latte makeup that focuses on mixing hues of brown to achieve a monochromatic effect. There is also coquette makeup that’s all about wispy lashes, glossy lips, and lots of blush. Of course, we shouldn’t miss the popular douyin makeup that typically uses shimmery eyeshadow, pigmented pink blush, and soft, blurred lips.

Makeup trends may have been created only in recent times, inspired by classic styles or perhaps, an old trend that re-entered the mainstream and garnered lots of traction from people today.

But if there’s one trend that would cut across ages, it’s having glowing or beautiful skin, according to professional makeup artist Chie Gonzales.

Beautiful skin’s always trendy

People can try different makeup styles for 2024 to find out what best suits them. But if they want a trendy look that would fit all face shapes and for all seasons and occasions, having luminous skin is paramount.

“Having a glowing skin or beautiful skin will never go out of style or trend. There is always an effortless elegance to minimalist glowing skin. It’s fresh, it’s timeless,” Gonzales told republicasia.

Adding subtle highlighters is also a way to enhance and define the features of your face, she added.

For Gonzales, makeup is an art. It could also be a way for people to express themselves and boost their self-confidence. With makeup, they are free to do anything they like with their face as their canvas.

“With the trends this year and the past few years, it’s more of just glam and fresh makeup. It’s just that makeup is an art, so it’s up to you if you want to add a pop of color for your eyes or lips, then just do makeup balance,” she emphasized.

No matter what makeup style people try—whether they want to make their eyes pop or the other way around—Gonzales said that taking care of their skin is a must.

“Right now, you can see yung iba, they just follow yung trends on TikTok or what they see on Instagram,” she said, adding “[But] it’s always gonna come back to having good skin.”

Natural and glam looks

Natural look can be used in any season, be it in spring or summer. You may also opt to have it in daytime or nighttime—or simply, whenever you feel like serving the look.

To achieve a natural effect, Gonzales said that using one shade of eyeshadow is fine. It could be neutral or earth tone eyeshadow with a touch of shimmer, completed with a muted or natural nude shade of lipstick.

Unlike natural makeup, glam makeup is typically used at night as it enhances facial features that aren’t noticeable in broad daylight.

For the glam look, the makeup artist said it is good to have red or berry lipstick and an intensified eyeshadow.

“Sometimes having a muted eyeshadow can be paired with a red lipstick and you can have a glam makeup na for the night,” said Gonzales.

But glam makeup can also be used in daytime events like weddings. Soft glam makeup is an option for those who are not a fan of dark eyeshadows.

If that’s the case, the makeup artist suggested using blush and a darker shade of lipstick.

Regardless of whether people go for natural makeup or glam look, Gonzales said makeup trends will still depend on the style they are comfortable with.

“As I’ve said, makeup is an art. So, walang magja-judge if you want a different shade of color na wala sa trend na sinabi. That’s it,” she stressed.

What’s more important is to apply balance in makeup, she added.

Beauty tips

Makeup begins with good skincare.

“[This is] to have a good base because using foundations can overwhelm you. Like you want to cover blemishes, but actually, makeup is to enhance your features, enhance your face. It’s not to cover your face with this product,” Gonzales explained.

The second thing is to not be scared of trying different makeup looks.

“Don’t be afraid to experiment on the look that you want to achieve because at the end of the day, ikaw naman yung makakasabi na ito yung look na para sa’yo,” she said.

“Kasi minsan makikita mo, daytime pa lang naka-smoky eyeshadow na siya ‘di ba? If ‘yun yung gusto niya, ‘yun yung para sa kanya. It’s her personality,” she continued.

How about the basic items they should have in their makeup kits? Gonzales suggested having tinted moisturizer for lighter coverage, while a cream blush is also a must-have.

“Para hindi siya ganon katapang or hindi ka mabigla, you can always adjust. Since nasa cream blush na rin ako, I’m gonna go with cream eyeshadow kasi you could do it with your finger, you can always intensify the color if you want it darker,” Gonzales said.

Applying moisturizer is key to having a good base for makeup application as it hydrates and soothes your skin.

“Invest in your skincare because having a good canvas is really the foundation of doing the makeup look that you want to achieve,” advised the makeup artist.

Most of all, Gonzales reminded everyone to embrace their uniqueness and just go with whatever look that makes them feel good.
