Top 5 flea treatments for dogs

by Jericho Zafra

FOR fur parents out there, finding out that your dog has been infested with fleas is a huge nightmare. Not only do fleas give your pet an itchy and uncomfortable feeling, but they also carry diseases that could endanger your fur baby’s life.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, fleas are able to spread disease-causing germs by feeding on their hosts or through fecal contamination, which occurs when infected flea feces are scratched into an open wound.

But fear not because experts have revealed the list of top five over the counter flea treatments this 2023, according to Study Finds.

Frontline Plus Topical Treatment

Dog Product Picker, which provides dog product reviews, said that since Frontline Plus for Dogs is waterproof, owners don’t have to worry about their pets’ flea and tick treatment being washed away if their fur babies like to go for a swim or to splash around.

The active ingredient in Frontline is designed to get into the oil glands of your dog, where it will remain for an entire month to provide potent protection against parasites, according to the review. Dogs older than eight weeks can use this product without any concerns, and it is also safe for puppies.

Capstar Flea tablets

Capstar tablets kill adult fleas quickly. Many dog owners say they see results within a few hours. If your dog gets fleas again, you can give him another tablet. Your dog can take one pill daily.

However, Dog Product Picker said that despite seeing immediate results after a pet takes the pill, the product only kills adult fleas, not eggs or larvae.

It is also ineffective against ticks and other pests, it said.

Nexgard

According to a review from Hepper, this medication requires little maintenance and is extremely effective. It stops breakouts and kills fleas on touch. Additionally, it is the only anti-tick product with FDA approval for Lyme disease prevention. This alone makes it a desirable product if you reside in a high-risk location or enjoy going camping and trekking with your dog.

NexGard is an oral treatment, but it’s easier to administer than most because it’s incorporated into a beef-flavored tasty treat that dogs adore. NexGard is more expensive than many other products because it requires a prescription from a veterinarian, but its efficacy makes it a worthwhile option to consider.

Adam’s Plus Precor Flea & Tick Shampoo

Adams Plus Flea & Tick Shampoo with Precor is a sensitive skin flea and tick shampoo that kills fleas, ticks, and lice on contact. The shampoo also protects against further infestation. The conditioning properties of the cream cleanse and condition the fur of your pet, making it silky smooth, and easy to maintain.

The product has a clean aroma, is supplemented with naturally soothing aloe vera, lanolin, and oatmeal, and controls flea reinfestation for up to 28 days.

PetArmor Plus Flea and Tick Topical Prevention

PetArmor Plus Flea and Tick Topical Prevention is effective against fleas, including adults, flea eggs, and flea larvae. It prevents your pet from both fleas and ticks. It is also effective against several species of ticks, including dog, brown, lone star, and deer ticks. These are the ones that are most likely to transmit serious diseases, such as Lyme disease, the Dog Product Picker said.
