RA asks Gen Zs: What’s your go-to outfit during cold season?

by Joanna Deala

STATE weather bureau PAGASA forecasted that Filipinos could experience a rainy Christmas in various parts of the country due to the shear line and the northeast monsoon, locally known as amihan.

When times like this come, we begin looking for the coziest, rainy-day outfits that have been chilling in our closets and waiting for them to be worn. Rainy season can be a bit of a hassle for some of us, but we cannot let it ruin our holiday plans and, of course, our style.

For several members of Generation Z, dressing up for this season is not only about getting comfortable but also keeping that fashionable flair.

And so, republicasia took this opportunity to ask about their typical outfits during the cold season and why it has become their fashion staple.

Hoodie

When bracing the cold, it’s essential to pick a garment that will give you warmth and protection from the weather and its elements.

And for college student Dayne Patrick Entila, hoodie serves both these purposes.

“Ang go-to outfit ko ‘pag malamig is hoodie. Bakit? Kasi accessible [at] comfortable,” he said.

A hoodie is a sweatshirt but with a hood attached to it to cover the wearer’s head.

This clothing typically has two designs: a zip-up hoodie and a pullover hoodie. But both styles usually have another functional feature–two pockets for zip-up hoodies and a kangaroo pocket in front for a pullover hoodie to keep the wearer’s hands warm or hold their essentials like phone or wallet.

Cargo pants + loafers + long sleeves

Cargo pants are one of the old trends that became popular among the young generation. Initially designed for the military in the 1930s, this trouser has many spacious pockets that are perfect for carrying tools and other essentials.

Many young individuals wear cargo pants today as part of their streetwear fashion in various seasons, including rainy or cold seasons.

Among those who have turned cargo pants into a fashion staple is 21-year-old student Hannah Isabelle Medrano.

For her cold-season attire, Medrano shared with republicasia that she usually combines the trousers with loafers and any long-sleeve clothing.

“I think for this season mas suitable yung cargo pants, loafers, and anything na long sleeve,” she said.

For Medrano, these three fashion items go well with other clothing.

“Madali kasing i-partner and kahit anong season bagay talaga siya pero depende pa rin sa kapal nung damit,” she continued.

Cropped sweater + baggy parachute trousers

While cropped sweaters may not be as functional as ordinary sweaters, they bring a cozy vibe to the wearer which makes it perfect for an indoor or pambahay outfit.

Adding to this homely feeling is baggy parachute trousers with a loose fit that will allow comfortable movement.

“Ang mas suitable na go-to outfit ko ay crop top sweater and baggy parachute na trousers,” Germo said. “Para mas comfortable lang kasi cold season.”

Streetwear vest + cargo pants

The rainy season won’t stop 21-year-old student Steve Francis Tabada from going aesthetic with his go-to streetwear vest and cargo pants.

Like cargo pants, some streetwear vests have multiple pockets that can be used for storing necessities. It is usually styled with a short or long-sleeved shirt.

“Go-to outfit ko lang is pwedeng ganito lang din, cargo pants. Pwedeng mag-[suot] na lang ako [ng] jacket or iba’t-ibang vest parang streetwear,” he said.

For Tabada, this look gives off aesthetic vibes.

“Ang comfy niya lang tingnan. Aesthetic lang,” he added.

Oversized jackets

Oversized fashion has also been around for decades, but it remains popular among many millennials and Gen Zs, especially jackets. These are the ones we look for first once we begin to feel the cold breeze of wind that punches our faces.

Jackets are commonly made out of denim, leather, cotton, or wool and have various styles that may have either a zipper or buttons.

Among the enthusiasts of oversized jackets are students Nicole Santiago, 23, and Koji Morales, 18.

“Nowadays, super ramdam na yung simoy ng Pasko, so mostly kapag nalabas ako, gusto ko talaga yung malalaki yung jackets ko,” Morales said.

“Iba kasi yung nadadala nitong porma kapag malaki yung jacket mo,” he added. “Mas nagiging malaki yung katawan ko.”

Santiago, on the other hand, said she prefers to put her jacket on top of a crop top shirt and partner them with wide-leg pants.

“Sinusunod ko kasi yung rule na ‘pag fitted yung taas, dapat po maluwag yung pangbaba,” she said.

As we begin to experience the rainy season in the country, it’s probably time for us to get our cold-season outfits out of our closets or discover new and trendy attires to keep ourselves warm and protected this Christmas.
