by Malou Talosig-Bartolome

AFTERSHOCKS continue to rock Davao and Caraga regions following the strong Magnitude 6.0 quake Wednesday night in Davao De Oro.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said that as of 2pm February 2, a total of 383 aftershocks were recorded since the major earthquake .

Of these aftershocks, 59 were recorded simultaneously in three or more stations.

Only one of these aftershocks was felt, an hour after the major earthquake. The magnitude range of the aftershocks is between 1.3 to 3.6.

Phivolcs warned the public to expect more aftershocks for one month or more.

Amended report

Meanwhile, Phivolcs has amended its report on the earthquake that hit Davao de Oro Wednesday night.

In its report published today, February 2, Phivolcs said the quake’s epicenter is in Compostela, another town in Davao De Oro. Last night, Phivolcs said the epicenter was near New Bataan town.

“Sa replotting ng location, na-update ang reference to Compostela kasi mas malapit po ito sa epicenter. Automatic ina-identify ng system ung nearest town/landmark,” Phivolcs said.

The exact coordinates of the epicenter are: 07.65°N, 126.16°E. Based on Google maps, it is located within Barangay San Miguel in Compostela town. The nearest establishment to the epicenter is the Iglesia Ni Cristo – Local ng Kumilid.

The quake’s magnitude was also changed from 6.1 to 6.0.

Phivolcs data on places where the quake was felt and the corresponding intensity was also updated.
