Olivia Rodrigo accused of plagiarism over SNL ‘American Bitch’ performance

by Deanna Macaranas

AMERICAN songwriter and actress Olivia Rodrigo was accused of plagiarism by musician Noelle Sucks over her ‘American Bitch’ SNL performance.

On a Saturday Night Live (SNL) episode on December 9, Rodrigo starred as the musical guest.

Her SNL performance was later called out by musician Noelle Denton also known for her stage name ‘Noelle Sucks’. Denton said Rodrigo’s SNL ‘American Bitch’ performance was copied from one of her music videos.

“So I’m pretty sure that my art got stolen and put on Saturday Night Live for Olivia Rodrigo SNL performance,” Denton stated on a TikTok video.

She showed a side by side comparison of her and Rodrigo’s performance and said everything is really ‘close’ from camera zooming to synchronized movements.

“It’s just the same camera movement and everything. And as I’m speaking right now, I’m still open to her team saying how this is a coincidence or something.”

Denton also said she believes there’s a chance that Rodrigo’s creative director–Tarik Mikou might have seen her music video through a mutual friend on Instagram who previously promoted her work. She reached out to Mikou about the issue but she has not received any response.

Denton then stated how she wanted to change the trajectory of the creative industry on both sides of the camera.

“People doing this type of stuff is a disservice to every single artist involved. I’m trying to work in the same industry, so I want to see a change. It just feels like a really important conversation,” she said.
