Musk scoffs at disabled Twitter employee he laid-off; says sorry

by Jericho Zafra

TWITTER’S chief executive officer and multi-billionaire business mogul Elon Musk apologized Wednesday after mocking the disability of a laid-off Twitter employee who aired his queries about his employment.

The Twitter fire stemmed after Haraldur Thorleifsson, a former Twitter senior director based in Iceland, tweeted after he lost his access to his computer nine days for nine days already, at the time when Twitter reportedly laid off another batch of employees.

Thorleifsson said that the head of human resources “cannot confirm” whether he is still an employee of the microblogging platform.

He also tweeted his concern since Musk has yet to answer his emails.

In a series of tweet exchanges, Musk has gotten the ire of many Twitter users after saying the employee “did no actual work” and claimed that the sacked employee was using his disability as an “excuse,” but the latter was simultaneously tweeting up a storm.”

“The reality is that this guy (who is independently wealthy) did no actual work, claimed as his excuse that he had a disability that prevented him from typing, yet was simultaneously tweeting up a storm. Can’t say I have a lot of respect for that,” Musk replied.

Thorleifsson responded to Musk and said he has a condition called muscular dystrophy affecting various parts of his body, which led him to use a wheelchair for over 20 years now.

“I would like to apologize to Halli for my misunderstanding of his situation. It was based on things I was told that were untrue or, in some cases, true, but not meaningful,” Musk tweeted.

Not the first time

Thorleifsson’s case is just one of the many controversies faced by Musk since the multi-billionaire acquired the platform for $44 billion. He has made controversial policies, including paid verification, retrenchment of company employees, and suspension of journalists covering the company’s fiasco.

Twitter security

Just recently, Twitter has once again made headlines after he announced the disabling of two-factor authentication beginning March 20. The two-factor authentication is an extra layer of security for Twitter users after the company said many “bad actors were abusing it.”

The two-factor authentication is now exclusive to Twitter Blue subscribers, an $8 subscription program that allows members to enjoy the platform’s premium features.
