‘Malamig ang simoy ng hangin’: Home remedies for colds and cough

by Deanna Macaranas

AS the December holidays approach, the Philippine weather continues to cool down.

Some people might think of this as a sort of blessing, as it’s a break from the warm, humid weather, while others might consider it a curse, especially those who are afflicted with coughs and colds.

While the amihan (cool northeast wind) provides us with a cool temperature to start our day, the weather can also trigger symptoms of the seasonal flu, particularly for those whose immune systems aren’t strong.

Want to find natural ways of reducing the chances of catching the flu these days? Check out our list of home remedies:

Get the right amount of sleep

We’re often told that taking a rest is essential to restoring our energy. Our mothers weren’t wrong in asking us to get some snooze every afternoon when we were kids.

Aside from bringing back your energy for the day, getting the right amount of sleep contributes to strengthening your immune system. Having a strong immune system helps defend your body against infections by protecting the body’s cells.

Stay hydrated

While consuming water is often associated with keeping our bodies hydrated, water does more than just prevent dehydration.

Did you know that consuming the right amount of water can also impact our immune system?

By consuming water, blood can circulate more freely in our bodies, allowing the flu-fighting cells to better fight off viruses.

Proper nutrition

“We are what we eat,” and that statement holds true when it comes to enhancing our health.

Consuming the right kind of food will surely provide you with ample nutrients to boost your health. We’re referring, of course, to a balanced diet of foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals.

Take your vitamins regularly

Some might argue that eating the right food for proper nutrition is sufficient. However, taking vitamins regularly ensures that you’re getting the nutrients that your body needs.

Have some ginger or green tea

Sometimes, consuming nutritious food and vitamins isn’t enough. Even the healthiest person alive can still catch the flu. Consuming tea is sometimes overlooked, as some people underestimate the effects of drinking it.

Tea contains properties that give the immune system a boost, and it also helps your body cope by easing flu symptoms.
