Free telescope viewing, astronomy lectures, and more offered on Saturday

by Joanna Deala

FREE lectures about astronomy continue as the country celebrates International Observe the Moon Night.

The Philippine Astronomical Society (PAS) announced that it will hold “International Observe the Moon Night 2023” on October 21, in collaboration with Manila Street Astronomers (MSA).

Attendees may join a variety of activities such as telescope viewing, astronomy lectures, open mic night, and coloring activities.

It will also feature a moon gallery and a meteorite exhibit.

The PAS said that the event is free and open to the public.

“International Observe the Moon Night (INOMN) 2023” will be held at Ayala Malls Feliz in Marikina City, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Interested individuals may register through this link. Attendees will receive a certificate of participation.

“So what are you waiting for? Come and observe the beauty of our luna in one spectacular night,” the organization said.

According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), International Observe the Moon Night is usually observed every September or October of the year, “when the Moon is around first quarter” because it is “a great phase for evening observing.”

“A first-quarter Moon offers excellent viewing opportunities along the terminator (the line between night and day), where shadows enhance the Moon’s cratered landscape,” it said.

Guidelines

The PAS also released guidelines that attendees should follow in joining the activities.

For open mic nights, participants may sing, dance, or perform spoken word poetry, as long as it is related to the moon, night sky, or astronomy.

They are advised to bring their own instrument and props needed for their performance, as the organization will only provide a sound system and a television.

Each performer will be given a maximum of 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, individuals may opt to choose from the available templates provided by the PAS or create their own artwork for the coloring activities.

The organization will provide them with crayons, but they may also bring their own coloring materials. Their output may be displayed in the event.

Moon gallery

Moon gallery is an opportunity for you to showcase your favorite photograph of the Earth’s nearest neighbor.

“Our virtual moon gallery is back!” the organization announced.

The PAS said that it will open submissions for moon photos, where it will select several images that will be featured during the INOMN 2023 and in the organization’s Facebook page.
