DLSU-D to offer Taylor Swift, pop culture-related electives

by Joanna Deala

ANOTHER school in the Philippines aims to give their students a deeper understanding of pop culture and that includes the impact the American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift has had.

De La Salle University-Dasmariñas (DLSU-D) will offer senior high school students (SHS) a course that would allow them to explore Swift “musical artistry that has captured hearts worldwide.”

The DLSU-D’s Facebook page announced that the course “Speak Now: Swifties Unleashed” will be offered in the second semester, giving students a “backstage pass” to the “magic” behind the songs of the 12-time Grammy winner.

“Don’t miss the chance to curate your semester with the perfect blend of fun, learning, and passion. No more BLANK SPACE this coming semester,” it said.

The online enrollment for the second semester will open on January 17, 2024.

Earlier, the University of the Philippines (UP) announced that it would offer an elective which will explore more about Swift’s career. The elective class, “Celebrity Studies: Taylor Swift in Focus,” will be available for the second semester under the BA Broadcast Media Arts and Studies degree program and will be handled by Dr. Cherish Brillon, who is also a Swiftie.

The Philippines is not the only country that offers a course about the American pop star. Prestigious schools across the United States such as Harvard University, New York University and University of Texas, have classes related to Swift.

It couldn’t be denied that Swift’s popularity across the globe is at an all-time high with roughly 72,000 concertgoers attending her massive “Eras Tour” concert. This became the highest-grossing music tour ever, surpassing British singer Elton John’s five-year farewell tour.

Swift welcomed the new year by being the first artist to surpass one billion streams on Spotify in 2023, according to chart data.

DLSU-D has more pop culture-related courses that may pique the interest of its SHS students.

It has an elective called “Keeping Up with Bikini Bottom,” which aims to “discover the secrets of Bikini Bottom,” the main setting in the “SpongeBob SquarePants” series.

K-pop and K-drama fans are also in for a treat as the university will offer a “ScholastiK-pop” elective so they can immerse themselves in the world of South Korean dramas and pop culture.

With many young individuals taking interest in cycling, the “Pedal Up” elective will let students “explore the outdoors” and “embrace the thrill” of aerobic exercise.

If they want to learn more about cats, students may join “Meowmy Academy: Understanding Cattitude,” where they will discover how to “navigate life’s challenges with the cool confidence and adaptability of our feline friends.”

This was not the first time the DLSU-D had courses that were connected to the young generation’s interest in pop culture. They previously offered classes about “Star Wars,” “Harry Potter,” and some anime series.
