Blackpink is Time’s Entertainer of the Year

by Athena Yap

THERE is really nothing that can stop the all-girl K-Pop group Blackpink as the group has been selected Time Magazine’s Entertainer of the Year.

The popular K-pop group consists of four ladies– Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa and Rosé.

The members have launched solo projects and have made names as individuals in the industry, a fact not lost on Time.

In giving the quartet the distinction of being its Entertainer of the Year, Time said Blackpink “managed to become the biggest girl group in the world precisely by allowing its members to be solo stars in their own right.”

“The group may be bigger than the sum of its parts, but each of its parts is bigger than most other pop groups’ combined efforts,” it said.

It took note of the group’s numerous accomplishments, including releasing its second album this year that became the best-selling album by a Korean girl group.

Time Magazine also said Blackpink has become successful by being visible not just in music, but also in fashion and on screen.

It held a photoshoot with the group and Jennie told the magazine that Blackpink’s members are “very normal girls, at the end of the day.”

But the group’s accomplishments are far from ordinary.

2022 has been a good year for the Korean performers.

They performed their hit single “Pink Venom” at the VMA and they also had a blockbuster world tour in October. Even Hollywood personalities like Selena Gomez and Usher were seen supporting the group.

Blackpink also now has over 83 million subscribers on Youtube.

The Korean performers’ second album “Born Pink,” which was released in September, sold out quickly with over 2 million album sales.

They are also thriving in their individual projects.

Rose is an ambassador for Yves Saint Laurent, Lisa represents Celine and Bvlgari, Jennie is an endorser of Chanel, and Jisoo represents Dior.

Blackpink is the first girl-group that debuted under YG Entertainment in seven years. In August 2016, the group released its first single album “Square One,” consisting of “Whistle” and “BoomBaYah.”

Several years later, the group has several hits under its belt and looks poised for more success.
