by Athena Yap

What is Black Friday?

The Philippines too, is now caught in this Black Friday fever, a tradition in United States that signifies the unofficial start of the Christmas season in the United States. For this year, Black Friday will fall on November 25.

It is a celebration observed in the West after Thanksgiving which usually falls on the fourth Thursday of November.

In the US, Black Friday also means shopping season where merchants are all over both on on-site and online to cater to shoppers offering crazy discounts.

Although it may seem like a holiday, it isn’t exactly regarded in the entire United States. However, in California, Black Friday is accepted as a holiday for state government employees.

Huge Discounts!

During Black Fridays, sale items are offered at crazy discounts of up to 80% that shoppers just can’t resist.

Just like always, whenever Filipinos can, they grab opportunities for mega discounts.

Locally, online shopping applications like Lazada, Shopee and Zalora compete year-round, especially during sale season.

According to a September 2022 poll by the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Prosper Insights and Analytics, a projected 45% of holiday shoppers flock to stores or scout e-shopping platforms this coming Black Friday.

The NRF expects holiday retail sales to grow by six to eight percent this year while e-commerce sales are likewise expected to grow between ten percent and twelve percent.
