When advocacy meets social media

by Jericho Zafra

THE field of medicine is home to one of the most critical jobs in the history of the human race. Not only do doctors save lives, but they also make sure the general public is informed about how to properly care for themselves in situations where there are no healthcare providers around.

This is not a problem for some doctors who have turned to creating content for TikTok today aside from pursuing their calling. One of them is Dr. Richard Mata, a Gen X pediatrician who is making strides in keeping up with other content creators with the health information he provides.

Who is Dr. Richard Mata?

Dr. Mata is a Davao-based pediatrician and a motivational speaker. He started utilizing Facebook as his channel to educate ordinary citizens about the importance of public health.

He now has more than 1.2 million followers on the platform. On YouTube, he now has over 102,000 subscribers.

At the height of COVID-19, Mata began posting videos discussing the new virus, its variants, and the vaccine for it in terms that ordinary Filipinos could understand.

Since everyone was locked down and healthcare was hard to access due to movement restrictions, Dr. Mata also offered free tips on first aid and other home remedies that people could consider.

He made his debut on TikTok in 2022 and quickly amassed one million views for content related to breastfeeding.

Advocacy is life, but TikTok is lifer

The majority of the information he shares is centered on health; he dispels common misconceptions regarding children’s well-being and provides the public at large with helpful medical tips that they should be aware of so that they would be more equipped and informed to deal with frequently encountered health concerns.

On the side, he also performs viral TikTok dance crazes for his audience. Pediatrician turned motivational speaker turned TikToker and dancer? Well, learn from Dr. Mata.

Outside TikTok

Aside from being a content creator, Dr. Mata is also a full-time family man with three children. During the pandemic, he started running an online clinic that aims to cater to the concerns of Filipinos.

Online health consultation is one of his advocacies, and this is why he keeps doing medical content related to the common health issues encountered by typical families who do not have access to quality health information.

With his timely content, it is no surprise that Filipinos are signing up to follow him across social media platforms.
