NATIONAL Taiwan University (NTU) will now be offering a course about the science and sociology of insects as feed and food, starting on Friday, March 31.

The course will focus on the role of insects in resolving the global issue of famine and environmental destruction and how these bugs contribute to humankind’s future food supply.

Aside from this, learners will be able to grasp the following aspects regarding edible insects:

  • Think critically about why people eat certain things and not others, and the cultural influences that shape these views.
  • Be able to apply Diffusion of Innovations theory to food-related innovations.
  • Describe and evaluate the arguments driving the edible insect movement.
  • Know examples of edible insects and other insect products worldwide.
  • Understand in what directions the edible insect field is going, and perhaps decide what role they want to play in it.

The edible insect course will be taught by Professor Matan Shelomi from NTU’s Department of Entomology. This will also be available for free on the U.S.-based massive open online course provider Coursera.

The course will run for eight weeks and will be equipped with video and reading resources for enrolled students.

Although widely available, the consumption of insects is not well accepted in the Philippines.
