WATCH: How PBBM recovers from Freudian slip, calling wife Liza ‘First Lady Imelda’

by Malou Talosig-Bartolome

IT was supposedly a ceremonial departure speech for President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. before he flew to Tokyo for his 10th overseas travel since he assumed office in 2022.

He started out recognizing the dignitaries who were present at the Villamor Air Base including Vice President Sara Duterte, former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez. Then he went on with his litany:

“Members of the Cabinet who are all here today; the AFP Chief of Staff General Andy Centino; the PCG Commandant Admiral Artemio Abu; and First Lady Imelda – ah Imelda… “

He knew he committed a mistake.

But the crowd immediately recognized it and burst into laughter.

Duterte, who was sitting next to First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, guffawed at the President’s remark and took time to contain her laughter. The camera captured First Lady Liza’s reaction as somewhat amused and embarrassed at the same time. She had to tap the Vice President’s legs to stop her from teasing her.

Deputy House Speaker Arroyo, whom the President described as the “secret weapon” in all his trips, was also seen smiling.

The President, who also laughed at his mistake, found time to find a quick-witted excuse. He said: “I’m sorry Liza. Pero automatic na sa akin yun eh ‘First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos.'”

Then he reminded himself to memorize the correct line: “Our former First Lady (Imelda)… Our PRESENT First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos.”

A nice save, Mr. President. The crowd clapped on his smooth recovery.
