by Joyce Remo

The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) is set to honor veteran actress Vilma Santos-Recto, film producer Lily Monteverde, and filmmaker Nick Deocampo for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the development of Philippine cinema.

The three will be accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award during this year’s “Parangal ng Sining” (Honor of the Arts) on April 23 at the Seda Hotel.

Aside from the cinema veterans, the annual local film festival Cinemalaya will also be given the same award for “providing the platform for cinema artists, whether in front of or behind the camera, to be recognized for their priceless talents.”

According to the FDCP, Santos-Recto, who showcased her awe-inspiring versatility in her performances in various classic films, will be honored for “transcending stardom into becoming a symbol of resilience and professionalism.”

The FDCP also said that Santos-Recto is a “shining example of what it means to be a beacon to the public.”

The Star for All Seasons has received multiple awards in her decades-long career as an actress. She is most recognized for her portrayals in the films Trudis Liit, Relasyon, Sister Stella L., Dekada ‘70, and Haplos, to name a few.

Monteverde, also known in the industry as Mother Lily, is the producer of iconic motion pictures such as Blue Moon, Mano Po, Shake, Rattle & Roll, Batang Quiapo, and Hinugot sa Langit, will be recognized for providing opportunities for young directors and writers to find their spaces and voices in Philippine cinema.

Deocampo is a multi-awarded filmmaker, film historian, film literacy advocate, author, producer, and director of the Center for New Cinema.

His award is inspired by his lifelong dedication to scholarship in Philippine cinema.

He is well-known for directing the Filipino films Mother Ignacia – Ang Uliran, Memories of Old Manila, Pedrong Palad, and Private Wars.
