SpaceX says Starlink internet now in PH

by Jericho Zafra

BUSINESS mogul Elon Musk’s SpaceX announced on Wednesday that its satellite internet service Starlink is now live in the Philippines.

Starlink is a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite internet constellation that SpaceX runs. It currently provides coverage for satellite internet access to more than 40 nations.

“Available na ngayon ang Starlink sa Pilipinas,” SpaceX said in a tweet.

The cost of Elon’s internet service

Starlink promises high speed, low latency broadband internet, or internet that has very small delay times.

Based on the Starlink website, the internet service’s router and antenna will need a one-time payment of P29,320, while the connectivity fee costs P2,700 monthly.

The LEO satellite internet service will be first available in Quezon City. Starlink has yet to provide other details regarding the availability of the internet service in the country.

According to SpaceX, potential customers might anticipate a download speed of between 50 to 200 Mbps.

The benefits

The Department of Trade and Industry said last year that the launch of Starlink in the country “will enable a much faster broadband speed, better connectivity, more capacity for telecommunications services, and more affordable rates for consumers.”

The improvement in the existing bandwidth capacity would be beneficial to micro, small, and medium enterprises, it said.

It also said the satellite internet service would “facilitate virtual learning, e-commerce, and financial technology.”

Data Lake, a firm backed by billionaire Henry Sy to manage Musk’s Starlink, earlier said that it is planning to launch the internet service in the country within the first quarter of 2023.

Delayed launch

In 2022, Musk announced that SpaceX would launch Starlink in the Philippines, the multi-billion dollar technology firm’s first satellite in Southeast Asia.

Starlink was expected to roll out its operations in December 2022. But according to Data Lake, setbacks in the manufacturing and deployment of LEO satellites resulted in the  deferral of Starlink’s launch date.

The satellite internet service has been in talks with the Philippine government since November 2021, when officials met with Musk’s SpaceX regarding its proposed expansion in the country.
