A NUMBER of colleges and universities in Metro Manila and nearby provinces will revert to online classes next week if the nationwide transport strike pushes through.
Drivers of jeepneys and UV are protesting the government’s public utility vehicle modernization program by holding a nationwide strike on March 6 to 10.
Schools announced they would transition to online mode for the duration of the strike. Some also allowed their employees to work from home, while others required university office staff to report for work.
Meanwhile, Angeles City, Pampanga Mayor Carmelo Lazatin Jr. issued Executive Order No. 10, “suspending face-to-face classes in all levels in all private and public schools in classes in the city from March 6 – 10.” Mayor Lazatin is “encouraging” schools to revert to modular classes “to avoid disruptions in the academic calendar.”
The following colleges and universities have announced on social media the following changes in their set up next week:
University of the Philippines Diliman
- All face-to-face classes and work will shift to online mode
- Essential staff will be required to report to work physically

- For classes that need to be conducted onsite, such as laboratory classes, the departments or offices concerned are requested to work out arrangements in consultation with their students and with the approval of their unit heads.
- Work from home for employees, except for those whose work can only be performed onsite.

Meanwhile, the University of the Philippines in Manila said classes would still be held in-person despite the transport strike.
“From the OVCAA: As of the moment, there will be no class suspension or shift to online classes in view of the upcoming week-long transport strike. Please stand by for updates depending on the developments on the planned transport strike,” it tweeted.
Local government units in Metro Manila also announced their own contingency plans for the transport strike.
San Juan City
There will be no suspension of classes in San Juan City after Mayor Francis Zamora signed an Executive Order stating that all schools in the City will revert to online classes if the transport strike pushes through.
No F2F classes in Marikina
The city government of Marikina and Department of Education-Marikina announced the suspension of face-to-face classes at all levels for both public and private schools.
On the days of the transport strike, the students will continue with their classes using their modules. For those who have the capability to do the online class, may do so, as an alternative learning modality, they said.
Quezon City’s action plan
Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte asked the Quezon City Schools Division Office to conduct asynchronous classes throughout the week, noting that this is doable given the tablets issued by the city government to public school students.
Private schools can also implement on-line classes upon their discretion, Belmonte said.
The city also encourages businesses, where doable, to allow work-from-home arrangements for employees, she said.
Quezon City’s Traffic and Transport Management Department would place Quezon City Bus Service bus units on standby for possible deployment to areas with a high number of stranded passengers.
These areas include Cubao, Commonwealth Avenue, Welcome (Mabuhay) Rotonda, Novaliches Bayan, LTFRB, East Avenue, Quezon Memorial Circle (QMC) and Fairview Area.
Belmonte also instructed all barangays to use barangay vehicles to provide free rides in their areas of responsibility.
The Quezon City Police District will deploy personnel in critical areas to instill order in the communities and guarantee the safety of the riding public, especially PUVs that do not participate in the strike.
Taguig’s Libreng Sakay
The Taguig city government will provide free rides to commuters in Metro Manila and nearby provinces from March 6-12, from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m., and from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

- Route 2. Napindan/Tipas/Sta. Ana → Cayetano Blvd. corner General Luna (vice versa)
- Route 3. Waterfun → Market-Market (vice versa)
- Route 4. Waterfun → Gate-3 (vice versa)
- Route 5. DOST → Market-Market (vice versa)
- Route 6. BCDA Petron → Market-Market (vice versa)
- Route 7. Cayetano corner Gen. Luna → Petron BCDA
Mayor Laarni Cayetano said that vehicles that would be used for the “Libreng Sakay” will have the official logo of Taguig City.
