THE Philippines must become a nation of readers.
This was according to the Department of Education, which highlighted the significance of reading, especially among learners, when it comes to nation-building.
Reading would play a big role in the country’s development, Undersecretary for Curriculum and Teaching Gina Gonong said during the DepEd’s fourth National Competition on Storybook Writing.
Gonong said the stories that learners read could inspire them to develop a desire for learning.
“Seeing all those stories today in the mother tongue, Filipino, and English, we have so much talent in the Philippines,” Gonong said.
“So, we should do something to make sure that these talents prosper some more and you get to inspire other teachers and supervisors to write more. Because when you write more, you inspire readers,” she added.
In relation to this, the DepEd called on the public to appreciate their mother language and to rally support for preserving the Filipino heritage.
The department celebrated Mother Language Day on Tuesday, and this year’s event focused on the necessity of multilingual education.
It also sought to recognize the role of actors in education and related fields in promoting multilingualism and multilingual education, and in fostering quality, inclusive, and equitable learning, the DepEd said.
