FILIPINO filmmakers continue to prove they deserve recognition in the international scene as several Filipino films are set to join the 25th edition of the prestigious Far East Film Festival (FEFF) in Udine, Italy.
The film festival will take place in Udine from April 21 to 29. It will also have an online section.
FEFF is a non-profit cultural event that aims to “encourage and develop the understanding and appreciation of Far-East and South-East Asian popular films amongst European and Italian audiences.”
It also seeks to study and research the rich history of Asian filmmaking by revisiting classical Asian films, and to take part in the commercial distribution of Asian films across European and Italian markets.
As announced by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), among the films that will be competing in the Italy festival are the 2022 Metro Manila Film Festival entry Deleter directed by Mikhail Red, In My Mother’s Skin (2023) by Kenneth Dagatan, and Where is the Lie (2023) by Quark Henares.
In My Mother’s Skin, Deleter, and Where is the Lie will be screened at the Teatro Nuovo on April 22, 26, and 28 respectively.

The three Filipino films are among the 45 entries that were shortlisted for the competition. The other films are from Asian countries including China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand.
Meanwhile, two classical Pinoy films will be screened in the retrospective division of the event. These are the film adaptation of Lualhati Bautista’s Bulaklak sa City Jail (1984) directed by Mario O’Hara, and the drama film Separada (1994) directed by Chino S. Roño.

Workshops, networking events
Filipino producer and FUSEE founder Wilfredo Manalang will also be participating in the 14th edition of the historic workshop Ties That Bind (TBB) of the Udine film festival. He will be bringing the Jerome Zamora film Violet Flower.
TBB will offer participants “comprehensive knowledge” from European and Asian film industries and markets. They will also gain “high-level development under the guidance of top-notch experts from both continents.”
At the same time, the animated film project Ella Arcangel: Ballad of Tooth and Claw directed by Mervin Malonzo, produced by Emmanuel Angeles, and written by Julius Villanueva will be joining the FEFF All Genre Project Market to “explore co-production and funding opportunities.”
Furthermore, the Joel Ferrer film Fruitcake has also been selected to participate in the Far East in Progress platform, where it will be given the opportunity to look for international distributors and festival premieres.

“The All Genre Project Market and the Far East in Progress are part of Focus Asia, an industry event and platform for over 200 film professionals and decision-makers from across Asia and Europe solely dedicated to creating avenues to exchange views and further expand their networks with their foreign counterparts,” FDCP wrote.
FDCP will be leading the delegation in Italy, with actors Louise Delos Reyes (Deleter), EJ Jallorina (Where is the Lie?), and Maris Racal (Where is the Lie?) joining the Philippine representatives.
