SUMMER blockbuster Barbie continues to break records just as what it has been doing since its July 21 opening and is on track to becoming the highest grossing film of the year in the United States.

Currently, the film has already  surpassed the $500 million mark in the US and $657.6 million internationally, creeping up behind Super Mario Bros. Movie for the highest grossing film this year with more than $574 million ticket sales domestically.

The Margot Robbie-led and produced film has already raked in a total of $1.18 billion at the worldwide box office and is now ranked as the second-highest grossing film in the history of Warner Bros. in the US, dethroning Aquaman (2018).

Reaching over $1 billion global sales in just 17 days, the film is the studio’s fastest movie to reach the record, replacing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 with 19 days in 2011.

While many were surprised with this milestone, Margot Robbie, who plays the role of the iconic doll had actually  predicted Barbie could be a million-dollar success.

“I think my pitch in the greenlight meeting was the studios have prospered so much when they’re brave enough to pair a big idea with a visionary director,” she told Collider in an interview.

Just last week, Barbie scored one of the best fourth weekends of all time in the US with an estimated gross of $33.7 million– ahead of Spider-Man: No Way Home with $32.6 million.

Greta Gerwig has also become the highest-grossing female filmmaker in the US box office, as Barbie beat Frozen II.
