The country’s creative economy grew by 12 percent in 2022, data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) show.
Data published by the PSA on Thursday, March 23, show that the creative industry generated P1.6 trillion in 2022. The figure is an increase from P1.43 trillion income in 2021.
Although it doesn’t have a definite meaning, the creative industry refers to activities related to concepts that “build on the interplay between human creativity and ideas and intellectual property, knowledge, and technology.” It includes fields such as advertising, architecture, arts and crafts, design, fashion, film, video, photography, music, performing arts, publishing, research & development, software, computer games, electronic publishing, television, and radio.
Their contribution last year makes up 7.3 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). The PSA said this is a notch lower than 2021’s 7.4 percent.
Aside from this, the agency found that of all the creative industries present in the country, symbols and images and other related activities procured the highest share amounting to 32.9 percent or P528.35 billion to the total creative economy.
Income generated by symbols and images in 2022 was higher by 10 percent compared to 2021’s P480.41 billion creative economy value.
Symbols and images are followed by advertising, research and development, and other artistic service activities with 20.8 percent. Digital interactive goods and service activities came in third with 20.3 percent.
