Authorities have arrested one of the alleged masterminds in the assassination of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said Friday, March 31.
Speaking to reporters, Remulla said the suspect was arrested by the National Bureau of Investigation after “fleeing” the province.
“For the last three weeks, we were on his trail already,” he said.
Remulla declined to identify the suspect, whom he described as the “main player” in the crime, for now.
“I’m just telling you that there’s a breakthrough; it’s 99% solved. The Degamo case is 99% solved,” he said.
Several individuals have already been charged with the murder of Degamo, who was attacked by armed men while distributing aid to his constituents at his residence in Pamplona, Negros Oriental, on March 4.

Remulla had earlier said around five to six people may have conspired to kill Degamo.
Suspended Negros Oriental Representative Arnolfo “Arnie” Teves Jr. is also being connected to the crime; however, he has since denied any involvement.
The families of Teves and Degamo are political rivals.
