Muntinlupa RTC dismissed De Lima’s final drug case

by Kiko Cueto

JUSTICE has been served for former Senator Leila de Lima, as she had been cleared of all charges of drugs with the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court granting her demurrer to evidence.

“Demurer is granted,” Atty. Boni Tacardon, De Lima’s legal counsel, said.

It meant that it effectively dismissed her third and final drug case.

The former senator filed the demurrer in March, where she asked the court to acquit and declare her not guilty.

This is due to the failure of the prosecution to prove her guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

Her camp said that almost all the important evidence was already presented during her bail hearing.

In coming up with the decision, the court declared that the prosecution’s evidence was not successful in proving any alleged complicity in the drug case, as they previously granted her application for bail.

De Lima was freed on bail in November 2023. She was detained in Camp Crame since February 2017 over drug allegations.

He first acquittal came in February 2021, as the Muntinlupa City RTC-Branch 205 junked one of her three cases.

Come May 2023, the second acquittal came as the Muntinlupa RTC Branch 204 with Ronnie Dayan, her co-accused and former bodyguard.

A Quezon City court also dismissed De Lima’s two disobedience cases.
