Meet Eugene Layug, hitmaker behind novelty songs ‘Maghihiwalay din Kayo,’ ‘Akin Na Lang Syota Mo’

by Izel Abanilla

NOPE, he isn’t promoting infidelity, just telling a story.

With song titles such as “Maghihiwalay din kayo,” “Akin Na Lang Syota Mo,” and “Kabet Pala Ako,” you may think this is one guy who may not be in the right frame of mind. But listen to his songs first and you’ll uncover his true message.

Meet 24-year-old Eugene Layug, the singer-songwriter behind songs that explore the bitter sentiments of people in pain. Published under Kean Cipriano’s O/C Records, Layug has been making waves in the OPM industry because his unconventional songs catch the interest of many.

But make no mistake. His songs won’t make you cry; in fact they will make you laugh because Layug infuses these with comedic lyrics and instrumentation.

Songs for the single?

His song “Maghihiwalay din kayo” may sound a bit scandalous, but it is a funny take on some people’s bitterness about those who are in love. He thought of turning the catchphrase into a song title in order to inject some fun into people’s reactions to sweet couples.

Meanwhile, his song “Akin Na Lang Syota Mo” isn’t exactly about getting involved with someone who is in a relationship, but is about toying with the idea of asking permission from someone’s partner if he could have his girlfriend.

“One day, I just realized that the thought of asking for one’s jowa is funny,” he told republicasia.

“Is it okay to just ask for someone’s girlfriend or boyfriend?” he wondered.

Layug said he chose the particular titles for his songs because he wants to showcase the truest human emotions while reflecting his personality into his lyrics.

Ganon mga titles ko kasi naturally funny or kengkoy ako, so inin-corporate ko lang ‘yung pagkatao ko sa music ko. As much as possible, gusto ko yung personality ko mag rereflect sa music ko”

Funny man

He also wants people to laugh while enjoying his sound.

And sobrang simple lang ng mission ko sa music, ko yun yung makapagpatawa at makapag pasaya simple pero mahalaga”

Eugene Layug

Because of his unusual titles and lyrics, people could not help but be amazed by how such life situations could in fact be made into a song.

“Palagi kong naririnig na di nila naiisip na pwedeng gawing kanta yung mga bagay na nasa kanta ko,” he said.

“And also tawa lang sila ng tawa, goodvibes lang,” he added.

Layug aims to revive the novelty genre by releasing as many songs as possible.
