Magnitude 6.4 quake hits Celebes Sea off Davao Occidental

by Malou Talosig-Bartolome

A STRONG Magnitude 6.4 earthquake hit the Celebes Sea, some 365 kilometers off the coast of Sarangani Island in Davao Occidental province, Friday.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake happened around 4:02 am off the coast of the Sarangani municipality (editor’s note: not the province).

Phivolcs initially reported the magnitude scale at 6.6, but later amended it to 6.4 on its second bulletin issued around 9:40 am.

The quake was felt by residents in Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat, but only at Intensity 2.

Based on Phivolcs instruments, the quake intensity was at 2 in the municipalities of Glan and Kiamba in Sarangani, and Tupi in South Cotabato.

Intensity 2 means the quake was felt by few individuals at rest indoors. Hanging objects swing slightly and still water in containers oscillates noticeably.
