President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the Department of Transportation to defer the implementation of the fare increase for Light Rail Transit Lines 1 and 2, the DOTr announced on Tuesday, April 11.
“In compliance with the President’s instruction, we will thoroughly study how a fare hike today will impact on passengers of our three rail lines in Metro Manila,” Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista said.
Bautista also said the fare hike for Metro Rail Transit Line 3 was also deferred because of “infirmities in complying with the requirements and procedures.”
The DOTr said the LRT-1 and LRT-2 had sought to increase the train boarding fee by P2.29 and add an extra 21 centavos for every kilometer traveled.
This means the minimum boarding fare for the two lines would rise from P11 to P13.29.
Approved by the DOTr, the proceeds of the increase would have been used for the technical capability, services, and facilities of LRT-1 and LRT-2, Bautista said.

The last approved fare hike for LRT-2 and MRT-3 came in 2015.
The management of LRT-1, which was privatized in 2015, filed petitions for fare adjustments in 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2022, all of which, according to Bautista, were deferred.
