Looking for employment? Here are HR-approved tips to ace that job interview

by Izel Abanilla

EVERY May 1, the Philippines celebrates Labor Day to appreciate the sacrifices and efforts of workers and employees.

But before anyone can be part of a company and join the workforce, there is one test that should be passed: the job interview.

This is basically the employer’s chance to appraise an applicant’s general fitness for the available position.

Some applicants are able to ace it easily, while others are left looking for alternative opportunities either because they did not meet the company’s standard or failed to convince it that they are the right person for the job.

For those who are worried about passing muster, there are ways to increase your chances of getting that job offer from your potential future employer.

Malayan Colleges Laguna HR assistant Joshua Saavedra shared with us some tips you could follow so that you could ace that job interview.

1. Know the company and its products

As an applicant, it is imperative that you study the products and services of the company where you are applying for a job. You need to have a good idea about what the company is about so that you could show that you understand the business and organization.

2. Research about the position you are applying for

As an applicant, you have to show that you’ll be able to meaningfully contribute to the company’s goals.

“We value applicants who demonstrate professionalism and preparedness,” Saavedra said.

3. Go for “KISS”  (Keep It Short and Simple) answers

Stop beating around the bush when asked to answer a question. The more precise and confident you are when responding, the more you’ll be able to get the position you are eyeing.

“We understand if the applicant makes a mistake if we ask him or her about the company. What matters is he or she is showing effort to be part of the organization,” he said.

Key traits for a worker

But of course, passing the interview isn’t the end all and be all of your career. There’s a much more challenging task ahead, and that is to keep your job.

Contrary to popular belief, a bad performance is not the only basis for getting fired. Attitude also plays a major role in determining an employee’s fate.

Saavedra listed some of the traits an applicant needs to possess in order to thrive in a corporate setting.

  1. Be consistent

The most important trait to develop in the pursuit of life and career goals is consistency. Employers love workers who are consistent in doing their tasks because it shows loyalty and commitment to the organization.

  1. Be a team player

An employee who has a “team player” mentality improves the efficiency and productivity of his or her colleagues at work.

  1.  Be Proactive

Being proactive at work is shown mostly by assuming responsibility and having the initiative to finish assigned tasks.
