LOOK: All things ‘90s

by Izel Abanilla

THE 90s were a time of grunge fashion, pop music, boy bands, and anime. The decade holds a lot of memories that kids who lived through it just can’t forget.

For some reason, people now are so nostalgic about the ‘90s. Back then, there was no social media, Netflix and music streaming. With just the relative simplicity of life, it was a wonderful time to be young and free.

To complete the throwback feels, here are some of the things we knew and loved from the ‘90s.

  1. Boy bands

Yes! The ‘90s were that chunk of time when boy bands dominated global pop culture. Back then, teens and kids screamed their hearts out at the sight of music videos and guestings of these young boys who had voices to die for.

There were Backstreet Boys, NSync, Westlife, 98 Degrees, Boyzone, Five, Hanson, The Moffats and many others.

They were practically the object of infatuation of every ‘90s teen girl. Many of these boy bands are still making music up to now. In fact, Backstreet Boys and Westlife had just completed the Philippine leg of their concert tours and Filipino fans just couldn’t get enough of the nostalgia.

  1. MTV

If you’re a ‘90s kid, you were an MTV kid. Remember the time when MTV ruled television? Surely you remember shows like MTV Cribs, MTV Becoming, MTV Unplugged, TRL and many others. They were the in thing for the kids back then.

It was the time when requesting for a music video was done via snail mail sent to the VJ before the song gets played. Talk about organic.

  1. Grunge music

Before boy bands, there was actually another music type that ruled the decade– grunge music. Acts like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains dominated this scene.

Locally, there were Razorback, Wolfgang, Teeth, and Dicta License.

  1. Fashion

Remember your loose shirts and baggy pants? How about your vibrant colors and florals? They were the in thing in fashion back then.

They say the ‘90s were a golden era for street style.

  1. Cassette tapes

Before Spotify on devices, cassettes were the ones serving music back in the ‘90s. A cassette tape usually held six to seven songs per side with a cover that had song lyrics and information about the artist.

Kids today won’t even realize how a pencil can be used to fix a cassette tape.

  1. Family computers

Move your tablets away, ‘90s kids only want family computers to play.

  1. Teen shows

The ‘90s started the era of teen shows. Teenagers then surely still remember “T.G.I.S,” “Gimik,” “G-Mik” and “Growing Up,” among many others.

They say the ‘90s were the best time not only to be a teen, but to be a teen star as well. No social media were needed to skyrocket to stardom.

  1. Tamagochi

Just try to find a ‘90s kid who did not own a Tamagochi. Kids then were crazy about this handheld digital pet that owners had to care for just like a regular pet.

Yes, a lot of crying happened when these Tamagochi toys died.

  1. Betamax

If you had cassettes for music, you have betamax for movies. Unlike now when people source their movies from streaming platforms or online downloads, people then had to buy or rent tapes to watch a film.

They had to personally go to video rental shops and rent a betamax tape for a few days. Keeping it too long results in a penalty.

  1. Pogs

Gadgets weren’t much of a thing back then, but pogs were. These are circular cardboard milk caps stacked together and played.
