DISNEY legend Lea Salonga is set to showcase world class Filipino artistry when she performs at a state dinner that the White House is hosting for South Korean president Yoon Suk-yeol this week.
Salonga will be joined by fellow Broadway stars Tony nominee Norm Lewis and former Wicked star Jessica Vosk, according to a report by broadwayworld.com.
According to a White House official, the powerhouse trio will be “bringing a quintessential American art form to the world stage.”
On Twitter, the actress reposted the news and said, “This is happening.”
Powerhouse performances
Salonga, known for her powerful voice and perfect pitch, is globally recognized for her theater performances, especially as Kim in Miss Saigon.
She won a Tony Award for this role when she was only 20.
She has also received the Olivier, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Theater World Awards, among others.
She was also the first Asian to play Eponine in the musical Les Miserables and returned to the Broadway musical as Fantine in its 2006 revival.
But Salonga is most recognized by all ages as the voice of Disney princesses Princess Jasmine in Aladdin and Fa Mulan in Mulan and Mulan II.
Meanwhile, broadway fans are also looking forward to the performances of the other stage veterans.
Lewis’ career spans film, television and theater. In 2014, he was cast as the first Black Phantom in “The Phantom of the Opera,” which recently closed after a 35-year run.
Vosk, on the other hand, has appeared on Broadway’s Fiddler on the Roof aside from Wicked.
