#KULTURA: Why Filipinos Are the Friendliest People You’ll Ever Meet

by RepublicAsia

A SMILE goes a long way.

That’s how Filipinos always stood out among others. There’s something special about how they embrace everyone with open arms and bright smiles. According to World Population Review, the Philippines clinched the third spot in the Top 10 Friendliest Countries in the World (InterNations 2024).

Filipino hospitality is deeply embedded in our core values. It’s a hallmark of Filipino culture and tradition. Filipinos have the spirit of treating people with warmth and genuineness like it’s their second nature. They make friends out of strangers, turn guests into the family, and let people experience the warmth of Filipinos.

Hospitality as the Heart of the Filipino Culture

The culture of hospitality dates back even to pre-colonial times, where it emphasizes community-centered customs that have a strong sense of interconnectedness. This heartfelt tradition was passed down from generation to generation.

Despite the various cultural exchanges from the past, the spirit of hospitality persisted. This value is sometimes perceived negatively because Filipinos have this image of putting people on a pedestal because of inferiority and servility. In reality, Filipino hospitality is about extending high regard to people they meet. It signifies the relationships and overall well-being of the community.

Embracing Friendship: The Warm Spirit of Filipino Hospitality

It is rooted in the culture to know no bounds when it comes to accommodating guests and even strangers. When Filipino hosts invite and accept guests, worry not, because they will make you feel at home. Kwentuhan is a communal practice for Filipinos. It’s their way of creating meaningful conversations with others. “Kumusta kayo?” “Tuloy po kayo,” or “Kain ka muna,” are not just simple phrases for small talk; they’re an invitation to get to know their guests more and warm up to them.

Filipino hospitality truly radiates during celebrations. It’s not unusual for the entire neighborhood to be invited by the celebrants. Sometimes, they even invite strangers passing by their house to join their salu-salo. It is a known fact that Filipinos will keep your tummy full with their handa, not letting you go without pabaon or take-home food. They go above and beyond to ensure everyone is well-fed, comfortable, and happy. Filipinos have a way of making others feel included, no matter how grand or simple the event may be. Expect a classic treatment from them that will make you feel like you are a part of their family.

Filipinos have a remarkable ability to gain friends effortlessly because of their natural charisma. That’s what pakikisama and pakikipagkapuwa are all about: the shared camaraderie and humanity. It transcends even with the socioeconomic barriers, creating newfound and meaningful connections.

This is the #KULTURA of Filipinos

The core of every smile is a culture of warmth, generosity, and inclusivity. In today’s time, where change is constant, the ability to embrace one another with empathy is one of Filipinos’ pride, as it connects generations and builds communities, leaving an impression on people we meet.

From centuries-old history to modern time nuances, hospitality remains an enduring trait of Filipino people. It’s more than a social courtesy; it’s a reflection of the deep-rooted values and gesture of care. Whether through a shared meal or an invitation, it’s a reminder of the openness and joy in connecting with others. It extends beyond special occasions; it’s a thread woven into our daily lives.

And truly, in the Philippines, hospitality is not just a practice; it is a way of life. So let us wear our smiles with pride and keep the spirit of pagiging makatao alive. May every interaction resonate with the strength of our heritage and identity as a community. In doing so, we show the world our culture and the beauty of what it truly means to be a Filipino.
