Rainy Monday greets Visayas, some parts of Luzon, Mindanao

by Malou Talosig-Bartolome

HOW time flies! It’s Monday again and January is almost over. The supposedly dry season at this time of the year has yet to be felt.

Today, January 30, it’s still gonna rain in Visayas and many parts of Luzon and Mindanao. So if you’re in those areas, don’t take out your umbrellas from your bags yet.

La Niña’s rain bearers for the day: the Shear line for Visayas and Mindanao, and the Northeast Monsoon in Luzon.

Visayas, Mindanao

Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Caraga and Davao regions will have cloudy skies with rain showers and thunderstorms in pockets. The amount of rainfall may be moderate. But there will be times it will be heavy.

State weather forecasting agency Pagasa said another Shear Line formed near Visayas and Mindanao. It may continue to affect Visayas and certain parts of Mindanao in the next few days.

Base sa pinakahuling datos, maaaring maging maulan pa hanggang Myerkules sa Visayas, Mindanao. Maaaring umabot pa ng Bicol, at maaaring maapektuhan pa hanggang Palawan,” Pagasa weather forecaster Obet Badrina said.

Shear line is the narrow band of clouds formed when the cool winds from the north and hot winds from the easterlies converge.

As for the rest of Mindanao, the weather will be partly cloudy. But there might be isolated rain showers or thunderstorms brought by localized thunderstorms.

Yellow rainfall warning alert

Around 5am, Pagasa issued a yellow heavy rainfall warning alert in Agusan Del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur.

Yellow rainfall warning means the amount of rainfall expected would be 37,500-75,000 drums per square kilometer. With that amount of rainfall, flooding is “possible” in low-lying areas and landslides may occur in mountainous areas.

Light to moderate rains were also experienced over Basilan, Tawi-Tawi, Zamboanga del Norte, Davao City, Davao del Norte, Davao de Oro, Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental.

Eastern and southern Luzon

The Northeast Monsoon will bring cloudy skies with moderate with at times heavy rains in the following areas in eastern and southern Luzon:

  • Cagayan Valley Region
  • Cordillera Administrative Region
  • Bicol Region
  • Aurora
  • Quezon
  • Marinduque
  • Romblon

Metro Manila, rest of Luzon

The Northeast Monsoon will just be chill for Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon.

It will be generally fair weather for most of the day. But there may be times the cloudy skies would shower light rains, particularly in the Bicol Region.

Temperature check

It’s gonna be a bit warmer today compared the weekend chills in Luzon.
