Large parts of the country to be drenched today

by Leila Salaverria

WHAT are your Saturday plans? There’s a big chance that you’ll encounter rains when you go out today, especially if you’re in Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

The low pressure area spotted over the coastal waters of Lanuza, Surigao del Sur is not expected to get stronger in the next two days, but it will still bring rains in large parts of the country.

Because of this, the state weather bureau is advising residents in low-lying areas, beside rivers, or in mountainous areas to watch out for flash floods and landslides.

The same goes for those in areas that have been experiencing non-stop rains in recent days.

They should coordinate with their local governments to ensure their safety, said weather specialist Grace Castañeda.

On the other hand, the northeast monsoon will bring cloudy skies with rains in Northern and Central Luzon, as well as Metro Manila.

Luzon weather

The Bicol region, Calabarzon and Mimaropa will be wet today due to the low pressure area, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Those in Metro Manila, Aurora, Nueva Ecija and Bulacan could blame the rains today on the northeast monsoon, PAGASA said.

Flash floods and landslides are possible in these areas due to moderate to heavy with at times intense rains.

The rest of Luzon will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with light rains.

Flood advisories in Mindanao

The whole of Visayas and the whole of Mindanao are also expected to experience rains today due to the low pressure area.

Residents are advised to be on alert for possible flash floods and landslides.

PAGASA has also issued flood advisories for the Davao and Agusan river basins.

It said the Davao River and its tributaries remain below alert level, but light to moderate to at times heavy rains could affect these. Residents and local disaster risk councils are advised to take precautionary measures to mitigate the sudden impacts of possible river floods, flash floods and landslides.

PAGASA also said moderate to heavy rains would affect the Agusan River and its tributaries, and the water level is expected to rise. Residents living near the mountain slopes and or along the river systems, as well as local disaster risk officials, are advised to be vigilant and to take precautionary measures.
