It’s going to be a rainy Friday in Visayas, Mindanao, and southern Luzon, and probably will extend until the weekend
State weather agency Pagasa said the low pressure area they have been monitoring entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility Thursday night. It was last located around 245km east of General Santos City.
The LPA has merged into the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) but “remains less likely to develop into a tropical depression within 24 hours,” Pagasa said in its weather advisory Thursday 11 pm.
The combined effects of ITCZ and LPA will bring “moderate to heavy rains” over Eastern Visayas, Central Visayas, Caraga, and Davao Region.
Light to moderate, at times heavy rains, too, will be experienced over Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Quezon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, and the rest of Mindanao.
Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will have generally favorable weather, with a chance of rain showers or thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening.
Effect of ITCZ, LPA collab
“Flooding and rain-induced landslides” are likely under heavy rainfall, especially if the areas are highly susceptible to hazards.
Pagasa advised residents in affected areas to check the hazard maps if they are in danger of flooding.
“The public and Disaster Risk Reduction and Management offices concerned are advised to take all necessary measures to protect life and property,” Pagasa said.
Flood warning in central and southern Mindanao
Pagasa issued a flood warning advisory in the Buayan-Malungon River Basin in central and southern Mindanao.
The lower main Buayan and Maribulan rivers, including their tributaries, are above alert water levels as of 7 pm Thursday. The water levels are now “slowly subsiding,” but Pagasa warned of possible “re-increase or fluctuating stage heights” in the natural waterways of the river basin.
Pagasa warned of flash floods and rain-induced landslides in the following towns: Tupi and Tampakan in South Cotabato; Malita in Davao Occidental; Malalag in Davao del Sur; Santa Maria in Davao Occidental; and Malungon and Alabel in Sarangani.

What is ITCZ again?
ITCZ or the inter-tropical convergence zone is the band of clouds consisting of showers, with occasional thunderstorms, that encircles the globe near the equator. The seasonal shifts in the location of the ITCZ affects rainfall in many countries near the equator including the Philippines.
Temperature check
Baguio will probably experience the lowest temperature, a bit colder than the past few days at 16 °C.
Highest temperatures recorded yesterday were in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro (34.5 °C) Coron, Palawan (33.8 °C) and Laoag City (33.4 °C).
