HEAVY rains woke many residents of Mindanao and Quezon from sleep this morning, state weather forecaster Pagasa reported.
Or maybe not. As the rain makes you lull further into sleep.
But “bed weather” feels more like it in Benguet, Ifugao and Mountain Province. Waking up early might be quite difficult today as the mercury is expected to drop from 15 to 17°C, thanks to the Northeast Monsoon.
Thunderstorm advisories in Mindanao, Quezon
In its 4:25 am thunderstorm advisory, Pagasa said heavy rain showers with lightning and strong winds affected the following areas in Mindanao:

Zamboanga del Norte
Davao City
Davao del Sur
Davao Occidental
Agusan del Sur
Surigao del Norte
Surigao del Sur
Bukidnon
North Cotabato
South Cotabato
Maguindanao del Norte
Maguindanao del Sur
Basilan
Sulu
Tawi-Tawi
Sultan Kudarat
Sarangani
Misamis Oriental
Misamis Occidental
“All are advised to take precautionary measures against the impacts associated with these hazards which include flash floods and landslides,” Pagasa said.
Moderate to heavy rain showers with lightning and strong winds also hit General Nakar, Quezon around past 5:30 am today.
A thunderstorm advisory was also issued around 5:48 am for Nueva Ecija and Rizal. Moderate to heavy rain showers with lightning and strong winds “will be expected within the next two hours,” it said.
Weather forecast for today
Meanwhile, northern and southern Luzon are experiencing the effects of Northeast Monsoon.
Cloudy skies with rains are expected in the provinces of Cagayan Valley region – Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino and Nueva Vizcaya – as well as Aurora. These moderate to heavy rains may cause possible flash floods or landslides, it warned.
The Ilocos and the Cordillera regions may be cloudy with light rains, again due to the Northeast Monsoon.
Generally, the rest of the country will experience fair weather.
But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be bringing your umbrellas. There might still be isolated rain showers and thunderstorms due to the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), Pagasa’s caveat reads.
Temperature check
Benguet is expected to experience the coolest weather in the country today with 12°C temperature. Baguio City remains 15°C, while Ifugao will be 17°C and Mountain Province at 18 °C. Winds around these Cordillera provinces will be moderate to strong.
Gale warning
Hanging amihan or the Northeast Monsoon has extended its reach over southern Luzon coastal waters, enveloping almost half of Luzon mainland.
So, the gale warning was raised in the seaboards of the following provinces of northern Luzon, and eastern seaboard of central and southern Luzon:
Batanes
Ilocos Norte
Ilocos Sur
Isabela
La Union
Pangasinan
Cagayan including Babuyan Islands
Aurora
Northern Quezon
Northern and eastern coasts of Polillo Islands
Sea condition will likely be rough to very rough, Pagasa warned.
Rough to very rough conditions will prevail with waves that could go up as high as 4.5 to 5 meters, or equivalent to a one-story building
“Fishing boats and other small seacraft are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves,” Pagasa said.
