Lee first met fans in the Philippines in July 2019 in the wake of her hit show Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo.

Lee is currently starring in the third installment of medical drama Dr. Romantic, playing the role of cardiothoracic surgeon Cha Eun Jae. This is her second medical drama after The Doctors.

She first joined the drama in 2020 as part of its second season cast, where she won the Excellence Award at the SBS Drama Awards.

Kdrama stint

How did Lee rise to fame?

Before becoming an actress, Lee started as a model in 2008, joining the Super Model Contest where she placed 11th and won the Lex Prize.

Her first television appearance as an actress was when she played a supporting role in the drama It’s Okay, That’s Love in 2014.

A year later, she was cast in the drama Flower of Queen, where she won the Best New Actress in a Special Project drama at the 2015 MBC Drama Awards.

Lee landed more roles in 2016; as the chaotic Baek In-Ha in Cheese in the Trap, and as neurosurgeon Jin Seo Woo who’s frenemies with the lead character, Park Shin Hye’s Yoo Hye Jung, in The Doctors.

It was also in 2016 that the actress gained immense popularity for her titular role as strong and determined Kim Bok Joo in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo. This role led her to bag the Excellence Award for Mini Series at the 2016 MBC Drama Awards.

It was not only her role in the drama that was widely recognized, but also her love team with co-star Nam Joo Hyuk, which their shippers called NamLee or the Swag couple. This was their second time working together in a drama, following Cheese in the Trap.

The two became a reel-to-real couple in April 2017, but parted ways with one another four months later.

Lee was then offered another lead role in the 2018 fantasy romance drama About Time with actor Lee Sang Yoon.

In 2022, she joined actor Kim Young Dae as they played the lead roles in romantic comedy drama Sh**ting Stars.

This year, she worked with actor Kim Young Kwang in the romantic melodrama Call It Love.

Singing prowess

Aside from acting and modeling, she has another talent: singing.

Remember that viral video where Lee was singing Aladdin’s A Whole New World while driving? That’s just a sample of her singing prowess.

The actress collaborated with The Paper for the single I Love You in 2013, singer-songwriter Eddy Kim for My Lips Like Warm Coffee in 2016, and rapper Loco for Love in 2021.

She also sang the original soundtracks of her projects, including the Korean version of Trolls and About Time.

In Trolls, she gave her own rendition of the song True Colors along with actor Park Hyung Sik, and sang another song from the film’s soundtrack, Get Back Up Again.

She sang My Only One Person, I Am What I Am, and Tomorrow Will Be a Better Day for About Time Musical Special in 2018.

Lee also joined as a contestant in the singing competition King of Masked Singer in 2015.
