LORD of the Rings fanatics will now be able to carry on the story with another mobile game from the film franchise, and it’s available for free!
Players can now enjoy the new LoTR: Heroes of the Middle-earth, which features the iconic scenes and characters from the J.R.R. Tolkien trilogy.
First announced in 2023, the game was officially launched worldwide on mobile game distribution platforms Google Play and App Store on Wednesday, May 10.
Heroes of Middle-earth is an epic fantasy adventure role-playing and action-strategy game. It was developed by Capital Games and published by Electronics Art (EA) Games.

In this LoTR adventure, a new ring that possesses the power to reinvent history has been discovered in Middle-earth. Players will be the ones to determine how this power will be used — whether to wield it to do good or to succumb to evil.
“Seize the power of the New Ring and rewrite history. Good or evil — the choice is yours,” read the official blurb of the game.

The player versus player (PvP) game will allow users and LoTR fans to build teams consisting of their favorite elves, wizards, and hobbits from the popular series. These include Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee.
They will also have the opportunity to explore sections of Middle-earth that have never been seen before, and collect LoTR characters and use them to battle with other players.
Further, players can also hone their character’s skills across various game modes, join in-game guild, and play strategically to unlock team-up attacks and synergy bonuses with their squad.

Aside from this, characters can also be upgraded through a “deep, long-term progression system” while rewriting the fate of the Tolkien characters.
Although Heroes of Middle-earth can be downloaded for free, in-app purchases from the game range from P49 to P7,490 per item.
The game is rated for ages seven and above and includes themes of implied and mild violence.

Some reviews
While some LoTR fanatics praised the game for its “simple but enjoyable” gameplay and its vibrant, “cartoony” visuals, other Tolkien fans were not quite impressed with this game version of the fantasy franchise.
A review published by Comic Book Resources said that the new LoTR game possesses a unique style fit for the Tolkien tale. However, the game mechanic was so obsessed with the concept of leveling up that it neglected its purpose of telling an alternative story, it said.
The review further said the game lacked substance.
