Get a chance to sing “Defying Gravity” for Awiting Wicked

by Gaby Agbulos

NOW is your chance to fulfill your childhood dreams of playing Elphaba from Wicked! After all, everyone deserves a chance to fly, right?

A TikTok posted by Universal Pictures Philippines states that Filipinos have a chance to sing the Philippines’ rendition of “Defying Gravity,” a popular song from “WICKED The Musical.”

Here, Filipinos will get a chance to appear in a music video of the song. Entries can be submitted from September 18 up to 29.

The search for singers for this music video has been entitled “Awiting Wicked: A Celebration of Filipino Voices.”

In total, 30 winners will be chosen and will be given the chance to sing their renditions of the song Defying Gravity, which will be part of a music video set to debut alongside the film when it premiers in theatres in the Philippines.

10 of these winners will come from Luzon, 10 will come from Visayas, and 10 from Mindanao.

To join, you have to be a Filipino citizen currently residing in the Philippines and should be 18 or older.

To get a chance to be a part of this music video, simply sign up on the Universal Studios TikTok page (@UniversalPicsPH), upload a post dueting the seed video pinned on their page, and post a video of yourself singing along to the TikTok video with the hashtag “#awitingwicked”.

Remember: your accounts need to be public for you to be able to join. You can’t alter or enhance your voice, either.

Finalists chosen will be contacted by official representatives from Warner Bros. Inc., who will reach out to winners via direct message and video call from the Universal Pictures Philippines TikTok page.

Rehearsals, recording, and the shooting of the music video are expected to happen from October 6 to 13, 2024, so be sure that you’ll be free on those dates, as well.

About WICKED

WICKED The Musical is loosely based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West,” which is based on L. Frank Baum’s novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.”

The story everyone knows is that of Dorothy’s journey to defeat the Wicked Witch of the West and make her way to the Wizard of Oz to get back home to Kansas.

WICKED, however, focuses instead on the relationship between the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good before all of that took place.

The original production of this musical premiered on Broadway in 2003, featuring Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, and has become one of the most famous Broadway musicals ever since then.

Now, it’s being brought to the big screen.

“Wicked,” directed by Jon M. Chu, is set to feature Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Galinda. Some other names attached to this project are Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, and Peter Dinklage.

The first film will feature the first act of the musical, which follows Elphaba’s journey as she starts studying at Shiz University.

Wicked is set to debut in Philippine theatres on November 20, 2024, and finally get an answer to the question: “Are people born wicked?”
