The full implementation of dedicated motorcycle lanes along Commonwealth Avenue kicked off Monday, March 27.
Prior to this, traffic enforcers held a two-week dry run as part of the agency’s information drive. During the trial period, nearly 21,000 motorists were flagged down for violating the policy.
The exclusive motorcycle lanes in Doña Carmen to Elliptical Road start from the third lane from the sidewalk.
The MMDA listed down the following lane designations as guide when passing by the busy thoroughfare:
- Bicycle lane – first lane from the sidewalk (rightmost)
- PUV lane – second from the sidewalk
- Motorcycle lane – third lane from the sidewalk
- Other motor vehicles – fourth lane from sidewalk to innermost lane
The agency also published tips that motorists can familiarize themselves with in order to avoid fines and penalties in the future.
- When entering or exiting side streets, making a turn at an intersection, only change lanes if there are transition lines or pavement markings. These shall be at least 100 meters from the solid lines of their respective lanes. Use signal lights when changing lanes to avoid getting apprehended.
- In entering and exiting an establishment (i.e. malls, buildings, institutions, etc.), you are allowed to move out of your designated lane toward the establishment of 200 meters.
- In making a U-Turn, move out of your lane 200 meters from your intended U-Turn slot. Take note of Commonwealth’s changing of U-Turn slots (due to the ongoing MRT-7 construction) when changing lanes.
- For motorcycle users, motorcycles are not allowed to use the zipper lane.
MMDA reminded motorists that non-motorcycle drivers who pass by the dedicated lanes will be fined P500.
