ON Easter Sunday, an American media outlet exclusively broke the news that singer-songwriter Taylor Swift and actor Joe Alwyn have ended their six-year relationship. But some fans refuse to believe that this is true.
According to an exclusive report from Entertainment Tonight, the Lavender Haze songstress and British actor called it quits a few weeks ago.
The publication, quoting a source close to the couple, also reported that the breakup was “amicable” and was “not dramatic,”
CNN also quoted its own source as saying that the pair “simply grew apart and plan to remain friends.”
Alwyn has not been spotted in any of Swift’s The Eras Tour shows.
Crying over ‘Champagne Problems’
Amid the reports, a video clip from one of Swift’s performances in The Eras Tour resurfaced, where she was seen getting emotional while performing the breakup track Champagne Problems from her evermore album. It was a song she co-wrote with Alwyn.
Fans theorized that this may be a hint of the couple’s breakup.
But other Swifties are not so quick to believe the claims about a split.
Just a tabloid rumor?
Due to the relatively private nature of Swift and Alwyn’s relationship, Swifties have been rejecting the break up reports. They said they would not believe the news unless the confirmation comes from the 33-year-old singer-songwriter or her beau.
The couple, who was first romantically linked with each other in 2016, has been known for keeping their relationship away from the spotlight.
Prior to the release of Lavender Haze from her latest album Mindnights, Swift said in an Instagram reel that throughout her six-year relationship with Alwyn, they had to “dodge weird rumors, tabloid stuff” that they chose to ignore to protect what they had.
Alwyn also usually shuns questions about their relationship.
“I think because the precedent was set—that our choice is to be private and not feed that side of things—the more you do that, hopefully, the more that intrusiveness or intrigue drops off,” he said in an interview with GQ magazine.
Fans also insisted that the reason Alwyn has not been spotted in any of Swift’s shows is because he is currently working on a project.
He is playing Laertes in an upcoming film version and modern-day rendition of Hamlet which is in pre-production at the moment.
Some Swifties also theorized that Swift may be testing some of her friends’ loyalty by feeding them breakup information to know which one of them would spill the beans to the media, something she supposedly did in the past.
Swift spotted in Liverpool
Meanwhile, the 12-time Grammy winner was seen in Liverpool, England amid the rumors of her split with her longtime boyfriend.
The Sun reported that Swift would be filming a “Batman-inspired music video” with The Kissing Booth star Joey King.
The British tabloid also said that Swift was likely to be spending a “quiet Easter” in London with her boyfriend, “who has been busy shooting his latest movie.”
Fans call for respect for Taylor’s privacy
Swift has always made headlines for what she does — from the music she creates, the recognitions she receives, the controversies she gets involved in, and the romantic relationships she enters.
Because of this, Swift shared that she has learned to guard her private life “fiercely.”
“Having the world treat my love life like a spectator sport in which I lose every single game was not a great way to date in my teens and twenties, but it taught me to protect my private life fiercely,” she said during her New York University Commencement speech in 2022.
Fans asked the public to respect Swift’s private life.
They also urged the public to check their sources and stop spreading misinformation about Swift’s relationship, as “tabloids do not always get it right, especially with her private yet vague relationship.”
