‘This is for every little girl who looks like me’
In her acceptance speech, Yeoh became emotional as she thanked the award-giving body for honoring her acting performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once.
Yeoh talked about the importance of not giving up despite experiencing the peaks and valleys of life.
“Everyone of you [knows] the journey, the roller coaster ride, the ups and downs. But most important, we never give up,” she said while holding back her tears.
The award-winning actress also mentioned that this award equates to Asian representation.
“This is not just for me. This is for every little girl that looks like me,” Yeoh said while holding her SAG trophy.
She also said the reason they are in the industry is because they are passionate about their craft.
“We are here because we love what we do,” she told the SAG audience. “And we will never stop doing this because we really, really love it.”
Ke Huy Quan gets emotional
As he was ascending the stage, Quan, who has been out of the acting scene for roughly four decades, can’t help but feel emotional for acquiring another award for his remarkable performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once.
Quan thanked the SAG for giving him the award and shared that it was a “very emotional moment” for him as he was told that if he won in the category, he would be the first Asian to receive the honor.
“This moment no longer belongs to just me. It also belongs to everyone who has asked for change,” he said.
The Goonies star also shared that he stepped away from the industry due to lack of opportunities. But the present acting landscape “looks different” due to the emergence of many Asian actors who have been showcasing their craftsmanship, he said.
Quan also shared a message for individuals waiting for their turn to stand in the limelight — never give up.
“To all those at home who are watching, who are struggling and waiting to be seen, please keep on going because the spotlight will one day find you,” he said.
Jamie Lee Curtis and her love for acting
The 64-year-old Jamie Lee Curtis professed her love for acting in her acceptance speech at the 29th SAG Awards.
Although she has been at times called a “nepo baby” because her parents are both actors and she is married to an actor, her incredible passion for her craft allowed her to show the industry that she’s more than her blood ties.
“I love actors. I love acting. I love the job we get to do. I love being a part of a crew. I love being a part of a cast. I love what we do with each other. It’s such a beautiful job,” Curtis said.
The actress, who played the role Deirdre in Everything Everywhere All At Once, also shared that Yeoh was the reason she accepted the acting gig.
During her speech, she recalled a phone conversation she had with talent agent Rick Kurtzman when she was being cast as one of the supporting actors for the film.
While she was warned that the film was a “little weird,” she said she would do it because Yeoh was also in the film.
