THE Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) is set to honor veteran actors Dolly De Leon and Soliman Cruz as well as filmmaker Martika Escobar at the 2023 Parangal ng Sining.
To acknowledge their significant contributions to the local film industry, the FDCP will be giving the trio the Annual Achievement Award on April 23 at the Seda Hotel.
“Parangal ng Sining” is an award given to Filipino filmmakers, artists, and institutions as a recognition of their invaluable inputs into the Philippine film scene and to motivate them to continue achieving excellence in the field.
According to the FDCP, De Leon was selected to receive the award for “representing the Filipino as an artist, standing proudly side by side with the titans of cinema, and delivering a performance nothing short of world class.”
This follows her exemplary performance in the Palme d’Or winning-film Triangle of Sadness. She portrayed the role of Abigail, a luxury cruise ship toilet cleaner who led the sunken ship survivors to survival on a deserted island.
Triangle of Sadness was De Leon’s career-turning break that earned her historic Golden Globe and British Academy Film Award nods.
She also took home the best supporting actress trophies at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards and Sweden’s Guldbagge Awards.

Meanwhile, the council will be honoring Cruz for “being the embodiment of the consummate actor for both film and stage” and for “serving as inspiration to an entire generation of Filipino thespians.”
Cruz is one of the actors who emerged as a household name in the local entertainment industry, whether in television, film, or stage plays.
The film To The North, in which Cruz played the lead role, won the 2022 Premio Bisato D’Oro at the Venice International Film Festival in Italy.
Escobar will take home the same recognition for the “new generation of Filipina filmmakers who have broken ground to win praise from world cinema.”
She was recently hailed as one of the winners at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.
Escobar was awarded the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award: Innovative Spirit for the 2022 comedy drama film Leonor Will Never Die.
This made her the first Filipino director to ever bag a prize at the largest independent film festival in the United States.
