FILIPINA actress Dolly de Leon won best supporting performer at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association for her role in Ruben Ostlund’s classic satire “Triangle of Sadness.”
The day after her victory at LA Film Critics, the Golden Globes Awards announced that De Leon was also nominated as supporting actress from the same film.
Janet Nepales, a Filipina member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), said this is the first time a Filipina was nominated in the supporting actress category for the Golden Globes.
Nepales also congratulated Januel Mercado whose film, “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” was nominated in the Best Picture Animation Category. Mercado, a Filipino-American, is the co-director of the Dreamworks feature film.
De Leon played the role of Abigail, a cleaner in a luxury yacht who would eventually lead a group of people after being marooned on a remote beach.
“Triangle of Sadness” won the Palme d’Or, the top award of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.
Aside from De Leon, another Asian actor, Ke Huy Quan shared the LA Film Critics Association’s best supporting performer award. The Vietnamese actor was lauded for his comeback performance for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” a madcap meta-verse movie which also won the Best Picture Award of the year.
The 2022 best picture award was also given to “TAR,” a symphonic backstage drama starred by Cate Blanchett.
De Leon and Ke bested two other nominees: Jessie Buckley and Brian Tyree Henry for the movies “Women Talking” and “Causeway” respectively.
The Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA) is composed of Los Angeles-based, professional film critics working in the Los Angeles print and electronic media.
