DLSU, NU square off for solo second spot

by Bryan Gadingan

THE battle for the number two spot begins on Sunday, when De La Salle University takes on the tenacious National University at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Both clubs are coming off of significant victories in their previous games. The Green Archers buried Adamson University with a magnificent third quarter scoring run of 23-0.

National University, on the other hand, was able to recover in a wide margin triumph against luckless University of Santo Tomas, 87-69, after suffering their first loss last Saturday against UP.

Following their stunning 23-0 scoring run in their previous game, the Green Archers hope to continue their overwhelming performance when they play NU early this season.

DLSU sophomore star Kevin Quiambao led the team with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. Evan Nelle, the point guard, had a monstrous 15 rebounds to go along with his 12 points and five assists.

Green Archers head coach Topex Robinson discussed their upcoming matchup in a post-game interview.

“NU ever since has been a solid group, you know, Coach Jeff and the rest of the coaching staff are doing a tremendous job keeping the program really competitive,” he said.

“Just like what I said, those experiences will just get us better. It doesn’t matter who we’re gonna face, we’re just gonna focus ourselves on our team,” Robinson went on to say. “We will always know that NU will be there to really give us a really good fight.”

NU head coach Jeff Napa said that he stormed out of practice the day before their game versus UST. After pulling off the massive win, he gives all credit to the players.

Napa hopes that the nightmare they experienced against UP never happens again. “Natuto sila, they learned from it. Now we’ll see, tignan natin, coming to our next game, at sa mga susunod pa na games how we’re gonna respond dun sa mistakes na nangyare sa amin against UP,” Napa says.

“Ngayon na-correct nila, hopefully maging consistent, ‘yung consistency ‘yung hinahanap ko dun sa mga leaders na ‘yun kasi wala namang beterano sa amin talaga eh. They’re all equal,” he went on.

National University’s consistency will be put to the test when they face the formidable and unstoppable DLSU Green Archers. Fans can expect the Bulldogs to give it their all and leave with no regrets after the buzzer sounds.

“We’ll see, tignan namin against La Salle, kasi La Salle is a very strong team. Tignan namin kung anong mangyayare o kung anong kaya naming gawin. Kung ano yung magiging chances pagdating sa La Salle.”

Both teams’ morale is currently high following their outstanding performances in their respective games. This game will surely be a dogfight between two tough teams vying for the sole seat in the second position.

The DLSU-NU game will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, followed by ADU-UE at 4 p.m. on Mall of Asia Arena.
